Over a year ago, Red — the company known for its expensive camera gear — unveiled the Red Hydrogen One, its first Android smartphone. Back then, the company only started taking pre-orders for the handset and did not provide much details about it.
Back then, the company started accepting pre-orders for two variants of the Red Hydrogen One — one with an aluminum chassis and a more expensive $1,595 variant featuring a Titanium chassis. Well, RED founder Jim Jannard has taken to the RED forums to announce that the Titanium version of the Red Hydrogen One has been delayed. The company’s founder says the first batch of Titanium Hydrogen One batch from their supplier was a “disaster. All fail.” While RED manufacturers all its camera equipment on its own in its factory in Orange County, California, it has to rely on its suppliers and ODM to make the Red Hydrogen One. To make up for its customers who must be pretty pissed at this point after paying $1,600 for a smartphone 14 months ago, Red will be sending them an aluminum variant of the Red Hydrogen One when they get around to start shipping them out. And then eventually, when the company gets around to getting a proper batch of Titanium Hydrogen One, it would ship them out to these customers as well. Essentially, Red is giving customers who pre-ordered the Titanium Hydrogen One a free aluminum variant of the device to make up for the delay. The Red Hydrogen One has been delayed multiple times since its original announcement. It is now expected to ship this summer, and it will also be making its way to AT&T and Verizon.
